2024 Hurricane Beryl
On the morning of July 1, 2024, our blessed Hairouna was struck by the devastating category four Hurricane Beryl.
Damages
The roof of the pastoral centre suffered minimal damage and was repaired the following day.
Our church in Layou suffered damage from fallen trees. The sea defense wall of the property fell under the pounding of the waves. There is now a lot of sand and debris to be removed from the compound.
Our two convent schools suffered significant damage.
The Grenadine islands, especially those of the south, Canouan, Mayreau and Union Island felt the brunt of the attack since it was reported that the eye of the hurricane passed there. St. Joseph’s church in Union Island did not survive, it has been destroyed. In Mayreau where widespread destruction was reported, the Immaculate Conception church collapsed under the force and fury of Hurricane Beryl. Our only church in the Southern Grenadines which withstood the hurricane is Our Lady of the Assumption in Canouan. While in Bequia the presbytery suffered damage to half of its roof.
