Rest In Peace – Sr. Marissa Beriña D.M.

It is with much sadness that the Diocese has learnt of the sudden death of Sr. Marissa Beriña D.M. Sr. Marissa was a member of the religious order of the Daughters of Mary, Mother of the Church and worked in the Philippines.

Sr. Marissa was one of the many Sisters who came from the Archdiocese of Caceres in the Philippines and did missionary work here in the Diocese of Kingstown for many years. Her dedication to teaching young children to embrace the Gospel values, the faith of the Church, and preparing them for the reception of First Communion and Confirmation was unwavering. This work took Sister throughout the Diocese. She uncomplainingly used whatever transportation was available be it a bus or ferry.

Sr. Marissa had a love for the poor. Often, she was seen walking from her convent struggling with bags heading for the market to meet and give items to the poor.

Sister was a gifted artist and took pride in designing and painting religious banners which often draped the walls of the sanctuary of the Cathedral of the Assumption.

Many remember Sister for her cheerful and happy countenance and her contagious laughter. Her joy was effusive.

Today we remember and mourn the death of a joyful, much-loved religious. We pray that Mary, the Mother of God, to whom Sr. Marissa and her Community are dedicated, would intercede for her and for her family and community.

On behalf of the Diocese of Kingstown I extend condolences to Sister’s relatives, her Bishop, her Religious Community, and the Filipino Community here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

May she rest in peace.

+ Gerard County,
Bishop of Kingstown
