Letter from the Bishop – Aftermath of Hurricane Beryl

My Dear Brothers and Sisters,

On the morning of July 1, 2024, our blessed Hairouna was struck by the devastating category four Hurricane Beryl. Despite the catastrophic damage to infrastructure and reports of deaths we are still thankful to almighty God that we have survived.

Damages

On the mainland St. Vincent many houses lost their roofs, and some structures were destroyed. Many trees fell as well as utility poles which left the island without electricity for some time. However, some of these services have already been restored.

The roof of the pastoral centre suffered minimal damage and was repaired the following day.

Our church in Layou suffered damage from fallen trees. The sea defense wall of the property fell under the pounding of the waves. There is now a lot of sand and debris to be removed from the compound.

Our two convent schools suffered significant damage.

The Grenadine islands, especially those of the south, Canouan, Mayreau and Union Island felt the brunt of the attack since it was reported that the eye of the hurricane passed there. From all reports Union Island has been decimated. Our church, St. Joseph did not survive, it has been destroyed. In Mayreau where widespread destruction was reported, our church, The Immaculate Conception collapsed under the force and fury of Hurricane Beryl. Our only church in the Southern Grenadines which withstood the hurricane is Our Lady of the Assumption in Canouan. While in Bequia the presbytery suffered damage to half of its roof.

Although the picture seems to be one of destruction, we are grateful that not many lives were lost. We are a God fearing and resilient people and in the midst of these trials and tribulations we will rebuild, we will not lose hope in our God who is with us. In heartfelt empathy with my flock at this difficult time I will be visiting the islands as soon as possible. We are thankful for the outpouring of love, care and concern of all those who reached out to us from here and abroad. We thank you for your solidary and prayers. We look forward to your support. Blessing to you all.

Sincerely in Christ,

+ Gerard M County,
